Item details
Matisse’s Woman with a Hat uses vivid, wild colors—greens, blues, and reds—in place of natural skin tones. Exposing his wife Amélie in bold brushwork, this radical 1905 portrait sparked the controversy that launched Fauvism.

Meet your artist
Henri Matisse (1869–1954) gave color a freedom that changed modern painting. A leading figure of Fauvism, he pared interiors, portraits, and landscapes down to bold shapes and vibrant hues. Later, working with painted paper cutouts, he found new ways to bring movement and rhythm to simple forms.
